Learning Forward | Dec 8-11

It’s good to know what we do, but how we do it makes all the difference.

Our mission is to advance agency for absolutely every learner.

Our Approach

We activate our core values using personalized, evidence-based practices.

We are on a mission to strengthen intergenerational, learner-centered communities to be more inclusive, focused, and connected. We integrate the building blocks of inclusion, belonging, restorative practices, and efficacy throughout each pathway as a way to advance agency for absolutely every learner.

The Impact Team framework is a continuous improvement model anchored in the mission of advancing learner ownership and agency through collaborative inquiry. Collaborative inquiry is an investigative process in which study and inquiry lead to collective actions that make a positive impact in teaching and learning.

The Impact Team MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support) Framework is the only MTSS framework in which students make decisions about the academic, social, and emotional support they need. Our goal is to develop empowered learners by cultivating a healthy learning identity with every stakeholder we serve.

Our Evidence Base

We anchor our personalized approach in a diverse evidence base that is learner-centered, asset-based, and culturally responsive-sustaining.

Positive organizational scholarship is the study of that which is positive, flourishing, and life-giving in organizations. The four key components of positive organizational scholarship are self-efficacy, hope, optimism, and resiliency. Schools and systems that are successful in adapting the four components are able to manage organizational performance in a positive manner.

Collective efficacy refers to a shared belief that the school’s stakeholders can have a positive impact on student achievement collectively. Collective efficacy is evident when teachers see themselves as part of a team working in the best interest of absolutely every learner. When educators believe in their collective ability to lead the improvement of student outcomes, higher levels of learning result (Donohoo, 2018).

Restorative practices is an emerging social science that studies how to strengthen relationships between individuals as well as social connections within communities. Restorative practices have deep roots within indigenous communities throughout the world.

Assessment as learning thrives when learners determine, reflect on and monitor their progress towards their academic, social, and emotional goals and aspirations. It integrates metacognition and self-regulated learning. As a result, learners have a model to think about their own learning more explicitly, often by teaching them specific strategies for planning, monitoring, and evaluating their learning. The potential impact of metacognitive and self-regulatory approaches is high, potentially resulting in seven months of additional progress.

Deeper learning combines a deeper understanding of core academic content with an emphasis on learning transfer, the ability to transfer understanding to new situations. Deeper learning also leverages core dispositions related to SEL and 21st century skills. The 6 Cs of deeper learning are Character, Citizenship, Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Critical Thinking.

Our Tools

Our evidence gathering tools have been designed in partnership with renowned, global researcher, Professor Alan Daly. We use various tools and evidence to identify and monitor key areas for continuous improvement.

Measuring stakeholders' perceptions of the learning community is vital for the continuous improvement planning process - because perception shapes reality. Core Connections Climate Inventory is a research-based instrument used by schools and systems to monitor core climate areas connected to a district’s strategic plan. Core climate areas are chosen based on the system’s focus (ie: relational trust, collective efficacy, sense of belonging, etc.).

The success of any system-wide learning goal is driven by connected, authentic relationships. Organizational Network Mapping allows you to see the people side of this equation as an entire system, versus the more common focus on individual performers. This new optic makes the intricate details of the true structure of your organization visible; how it currently operates and functions and how well or poorly teams connect, communicate, and collaborate to get work done.
