Designing Authentic Assessments

Dr. Paul Bloomberg
10:00 am - 12:00 pm CST | Apr 09, 2025 | Virtual

Creating authentic assessments involves more than crafting engaging tasks; it requires intentional design that aligns with both student needs and academic standards. Authentic assessments should mirror real world challenges, offer opportunities for diverse learners to demonstrate their skills, and provide clear pathways for success. To achieve this, educators must consider factors like relevance, accessibility, and feedback mechanisms. By focusing on these key considerations, teachers can design assessments that not only measure learning but also inspire it. Let’s explore the foundational elements that make authentic assessments impactful and inclusive.

This Pop-Up Problems of Practice session will explore experiences in implementing competency-based learning in traditional grading environments to identify strategies and approaches that prove useful in educating students, parents, school leaders, and system leaders in the shortcomings of a traditional grading approach and propose viable alternatives.

Traditional grading systems that include aspects such as percentage grades, use of the bell curve, inconsistent achievement indicators, bonus points for non-learning activities, or late assignment penalties, to name a few, may pose barriers to implementing competency-based learning in classrooms.
