First Graders at PS9 in Staten Island self and peer assess on their foundational skills checklist in reading workshop. Listen to how the teacher supports the conversation, but allows the students to do the thinking.
These first graders do a great job of understanding where they are and why they made the reading choices. The teacher coaches the students through the conversation so they can better apply the “Grow” feedback using the “Glow and Grow” Protocol.
The teacher also prompts students to discuss how using success criteria aided in developing their foundational reading skills using multiple voices while they read and clearly demonstrates how using success criteria gives students a target.
How might this protocol help your students?
