In this video, James Milkert, World History teacher at Lyons Township High School in Illinois is scaffolding goal setting with students after they engaged in peer assessment. His students are 9th graders.
Mr. Milkert first displays a goal that isn’t measurable and students discuss why it doesn’t work. More importantly, however, are the next steps where he gives students the opportunity to help him improve the goal.
Students go through the process with their teacher to build effective goals for their own learning that are actionable and measurable.
Additionally, Mr. Milkert makes sure that students don’t over promise and underachieve. He wants them to make sure they are selecting goals that they can meet successfully.
