As a former musician and forever music lover, I’ve realized that every school year deserves its own soundtrack!

Not the kind your custodian hums when shining the floors.

Not the one that randomly plays from a student’s AirPods in the middle of your lesson.

I mean an official theme song—a song that says, “We’ve got this,” even when it’s Tuesday in October and the copier is already on strike.

This year, I’m proposing we all pick songs that scream resilience, promise, underdog energy, and determination. Think less “graduation march,” more “montage scene in a sports movie where the ragtag team starts winning.”

Here are some contenders:

  1. The Best Is Yet to Come – Frank Sinatra
The ultimate classy pep talk. Cue the students walking in like Broadway stars (minus the jazz hands, plus the Chromebooks). This tune takes me back to my Big Band days of yesteryear.
  2. Eye of the Tiger – Survivor
Nothing says, “We’re going to crush this,” like hallway struts and imaginary boxing gloves. A reminder of my High School Days.
  3. Ain’t No Mountain High Enough – Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell
Perfect for those “we can get through anything” moments—Wi-Fi outages, missing lunch deliveries, surprise fire drills. . . timeless!
  4. Tubthumping (I Get Knocked Down) – Chumbawamba
For the staff who bounce back and laugh while doing it. Copier jam? “I get knocked down …”
  5. Don’t Stop Believin’ – Journey
It’s a cliché. But so is coffee in the teacher’s lounge—and both are essential.

Why bother with a theme song?

Because it gives everyone a shared inside joke and a rallying cry. It’s like saying, “We’re in this together, and we’re going to make it epic.” Plus, when things get tough, you can just yell the chorus from across the hallway and watch people laugh instead of cry.

So, what’s your school’s theme song this year? Drop it in the comments, and bonus points if you tell us the scene in your imaginary school movie where it plays. Take the quiz if you need some help deciding!
