What does it mean to be learner-centered?

There are many definitions and little consensus, but what is happening in PS 60 in Staten Island, NY is certainly an example of learner-centered instruction. This school is taking learner agency seriously and the students and educators have had repeated success engaging learners in student-led small group instruction.

Click below to listen in as Principal Donna Bonanno shares briefly why they began this practice and the impact it has had on both students and their teachers.

Reflect:

  • How are students already partnering with educators and leading the way in your school(s)?
  • How might student-led small group instruction impact learning in your own school(s)?
  • What are the barriers to starting this practice in your context?
  • What is your next step?
